ANALYSIS OF INDUSTRIAL PAINTS AND PIGMENTS

Specialists in radiocarbon analysis for over seventeen years, CIRAM analyzes, attests and certifies all of your biobased products, especially your paints, pigments and varnishes. Our scientists quantify the level of carbon 14 present in your colored materials in order to determine the biogenic part and the synthetic part.

Radiocarbon to characterize your dye materials

The RE 2020 environmental regulation is more demanding in terms of building materials and requires an increasing share of bio-based materials in construction materials. Paint, pigments and varnishes are an integral part of the construction process. That is why carbon-14 analysis of biobased content is the most reliable and accurate technique.

CIRAM, uses the standards
ASTM D6866-22
EN 16640 :2017
ISO 16620-2 :2019
EN 16785 :2016
ISO 21644 :2022

Carbon 14, a key indicator for your biobased products

Carbon-14 is an isotope found in all organic materials. This indicator reveals the presence or absence of natural products in a material. The concentration of carbon-14 will indicate the content of biobased products. The more carbon 14 is present in a product, the more natural it is, and vice versa. CIRAM is able to perform this analysis at any stage of the manufacturing of a paint, binder or varnish.

To meet the requirements of the Karibati standard and obtain the Biobased Product label, your paints must contain at least 20 th biobased material. Only radiocarbon analysis provides an objective, reliable and accurate result.

THE CASE OF CARBONATES IN PAINTS

Many paints contain calcium carbonate as a filler. Geological calcium carbonate no longer contains carbon-14. It will therefore be counted as a petroleum-based, carbon-14 free material by radiocarbon analysis. The EN 16640 standard considers the radiocarbon measurement in relation to total carbon (organic and mineral).

It will therefore be essential to discuss this precise point with our teams before performing the carbon-14 measurement.

CIRAM, a three-step expertise for paints, pigments and varnishes

Concerning coloring materials (pigment, paint, binders, varnish, stain…), CIRAM offers an expertise in three steps:

  • Develop the analytical strategy by considering the case “Carbonates”;
  • Measure the natural vs synthetic percentage of your materials by the radiocarbon technique;
  • Certify: in order to obtain an ecolabel or a certification attesting to the quality of your products.

Whether you want to support your R&D, check the quality of your suppliers’ products, or measure your finished materials, CIRAM can assist you at every stage of your industrial process.

2

High-performance coatings

The quality of coatings has increased dramatically due to innovations. In addition to the energy performance revised upwards, the impact of coatings on human health and the environment is now taken into account.

The analysis of paints and coatings by our laboratories also allows the obtaining of ecolabels. Whether it is energetic, ecological or for human health, the impact of coatings is an important issue for manufacturers.

The fields of application of our biobased analyses

Carbon 14 analysis on your materials and other products is possible on all industrial sectors. CIRAM performs biobased analysis for:

  • Basic chemistry: analysis of solvents, monomers or primary products;
  • Building materials by measuring the biobased content of insulation, soils…
  • Bioplastic to validate industrial plastics and obtain an eco-label;
  • Agri-food to test the quality of suppliers and identify adulterations;

Discover without delay the biobased content of your paints, pigments, varnishes, binders, lasures, etc.) and that of your suppliers.
