01 - Optical imaging techniques

Optical imaging enables the surface and underlying layers of artwork to be examined without contact or sampling. CIRAM uses :

  • Grazing light to reveal reliefs, cracks and deformations on surfaces,
  • Infrared reflectography to visualize preparatory drawings, repentirs or hidden signatures;
  • UV fluorescence to detect restorations, cleanings or specific pigments.

These examinations are invaluable for understanding the creative process, authenticating a work or guiding restoration. Non-destructive and available on site or in the laboratory, these techniques provide curators and experts with a precise and reliable reading of pictorial or manuscript works.

02 - Radiographic imaging techniques

X-ray techniques enable us to explore the interior of an object without damaging it:

  • X-rays provide a 2D image of the materials they pass through, revealing cracks, restorations, additions or heterogeneities. It's fast, portable and ideal for on-site analysis.
  • CT scanning, carried out in the laboratory, offers precise 3D modeling of complex or sealed objects, such as urns or gangue artifacts. It can be used to carry out real virtual excavations.

These technologies are used alone or in conjunction with other methods such as thermoluminescence datingand are adapted to the specific needs of art, archaeology and conservation professionals.
