Would you like to check the authenticity of a painting?

The provenance of a work of art, even when documented, is no longer sufficient to guarantee its authenticity. Faced with the increasing number of forgeries, scientific analysis has become essential.

Verifying the authenticity of a painting allows you to :

  • Detect possible counterfeiting or falsification,
  • Back up visual or stylistic expertise with objective data,
  • Securing an acquisition or sale,
  • Reinforce the heritage or market value of a work.

At CIRAM, we work with museums, auction houses, gallery owners and collectors to provide reliable, usable scientific evidence.

  • Checks consistency between presumed dating and materials used,
  • Reliable and accurate for up to 2 years.

02 - Pigment and material analysis

  • Pigment identification pigments and binders by microanalysis (spectrometry and electron microscopy),
  • Detection of anachronistic components (modern pigments such as titanium white, invented in 1920),
  • Comparison with palettes typical of a particular period or artist.

03 - Organic binder analysis (GC-MS, FTIR...)

  • Determining the nature of oils, resins or glues,
  • Identification of later restorations or additions,
  • Assessment of compatibility with historical practices.

04 - Pictorial stratigraphy (micro-section)

  • Cross-sectional observation of the different layers of paint and preparation,
  • Evidence of overpainting, successive modifications or inconsistent techniques,
  • Detailed analysis of the work's material structure.
